Kawasaki Z900 RS: A Retro Classic Motorcycle from Kawasaki

In 2017, Kawasaki had taken the wraps off its Z900RS motorcycle in Tokyo. The retro-themed bike pays homage to the popular and vintage Kawasaki Z1. What makes this motorcycle very attractive is not only its design, but also the modern engine and technology it comes with. For 2020, the model gets a new candy-green colour theme with contrasting yellow stripes that run through the middle of the bike. It looks properly retro in this theme and is also sold in an all-black paint theme.

Packed neatly within the frame is a 948cc, four-cylinder engine that produces 108.40bhp and 98.50Nm of torque. The motor is liquid-cooled and comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Kawasaki Z900 RS is BSIV-compliant.

The Kawasaki Z900RS is a beautifully designed, modern retro motorcycle. It has smooth surfaces and stylish design cues that give it a classic stance. It's a slender motorcycle and the classic design has been heavily reworked. The bike boasts of a flat waistline, thanks to the flat seat. Much of the motorcycle is inspired by the original Z1.

The motorcycle gets LED lighting all around, and the circular headlight looks lovely. The rear tail light is oval-shaped, and the up-sweeping stainless steel exhaust looks sporty. And the cast wheels feature flat spokes that could easily be mistaken for being classic wire-spoked wheels. It features an analogue-style speedometer and tachometer dials with a digital display placed in between. The screen shows a fuel gauge, coolant temperature, current and average fuel consumption, external temperature and remaining range.

In terms of dimensions, the Z900 RS is 2100mm in length, 865mm in width and 1150mm in height. The company has revised the bike's engine, exhaust, chassis and ergonomics. Low to mid-range power is good and engine runs smoothly. The exhaust emits a nice, sharp metallic howl when you open up the throttle. The bike accelerates very smoothly and loves cruising. It gets an assist and slipper clutch, and the gearbox is an easy-shifting unit. Throttle response is a little too sensitive and the engine is very refined. At 215kgs, the bike's weight is manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 130mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1470mm and a seat height of 835mm.

The Kawasaki Z900 RS has a fuel tank capacity of 17 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 20kmpl by ARAI, in BSIV guise.

Mechanical Parts

The riding position is just perfect: it isn't aggressive, but is sporty and upright. The Z900 RS has a taller seat than the Z900 and it gets a wider, handlebar that feels more towards the rider and the foot pegs are placed nice and low. Also, the circular rear view mirrors provide a commanding view of what is behind. Thanks to the neutral stance, good rake and a longer wheelbase, the bike has a perfect balance of straight-line stability and nimbleness around corners.

Cornering clearance is always available and the levels of grip are good enough and the brakes scrub off speed effortlessly. At the front, the bike rides on inverted forks, while the rear gets horizontal back-link suspension. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a trellis, high-tensile steel frame. The Z900 RS runs on 120/70 ZR-17 tyres at the front and 180/55 ZR-17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.

The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like an analogue cum digital instrument cluster, LED headlamp and tail lamp, cast wheels, ABS, traction control, digital trip meter and engine kill switch.

The Kawasaki Z900 RS is available in one shade like Candytone Brown / Candytone Orange. Candytone Brown / Candytone Orange is certainly a colour that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
